Vitamin D3 and Skin: The Cost of Staying Out of the Sun

Protecting skin from the sun reduces the vitamin D your skin makes. What 2000 IU is based on, what the trials at that dose measured, and what a supplement is allowed to claim.

Vitamin D is the one nutrient your skin makes rather than eats — and the more carefully you protect your skin from the sun, the less of it you make. That tension sits at the centre of every brightening routine, and it is the reason 2000 IU is in a sachet designed for people avoiding the sun.

01 — The contradiction

Sun protection has a cost, and this is it

Skin synthesises vitamin D when UVB reaches it. Sunscreen, long sleeves, hats, shade and staying indoors all reduce that synthesis — which is the correct thing to do if you are trying to prevent pigmentation, and the reason vitamin D deficiency is common in sunny countries, Malaysia included. Living near the equator is not protection when the practical exposure is a covered walk between an air-conditioned car and an air-conditioned office.

Anyone serious about an even skin tone is, deliberately, reducing their own vitamin D production. Putting vitamin D back is not a bonus feature in a brightening formula. It is the obvious consequence of the advice the formula comes with.

02 — The evidence

What 1000–2000 IU has been shown to do

The clearest skin-related trials of vitamin D are in atopic dermatitis — eczema — and they used doses in the range a sachet contains.

  • 1600 IU/day, 12 weeksIn a randomised controlled trial in severe atopic dermatitis, vitamin D3 alongside topical hydrocortisone produced a 56.4% mean improvement in the EASI severity score, against 42.1% on placebo.
  • 1000–2000 IU/day, 3 monthsA meta-analysis of trials found a pooled SCORAD reduction of about 21 points versus placebo. At one to two months the pooled reduction was about 11 points.

What that does and does not mean here

Those are trials in people with a diagnosed skin condition, measuring the severity of that condition. Lipo Crystal is a food supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease — so the correct reading of that evidence is that 2000 IU is a dose the research literature actually uses, not that a sachet treats eczema.

It is worth knowing what European regulators have authorised for vitamin D, because it is a short and specific list: normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function, normal function of the immune system, and a role in cell division. There is no authorised claim for vitamin D and skin appearance.

03 — The dose

2000 IU, and the ceiling above it

2000 IU is 50 micrograms. The European tolerable upper intake level for adults is 100 µg, or 4000 IU a day from all sources, so a sachet sits at half of it. That leaves room for dietary vitamin D and for sunlight, and it is deliberately not one of the 5000 or 10 000 IU products sold online.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble and stored, which is exactly why the ceiling exists — unlike vitamin C, the excess does not simply leave. If you already take a vitamin D supplement, or a multivitamin containing one, add the amounts together before adding this.

The “liposomal” part follows the same logic as the vitamin C: a lipid carrier for a nutrient that needs fat to be absorbed. In this formula it also has 100 mg of virgin coconut oil travelling with it.

04 — Testing

The only way to know where you stand

Vitamin D status is measurable. A blood test for 25-hydroxyvitamin D is inexpensive, widely available in Malaysia and Singapore, and it is the only thing that turns guesswork into a number. If you are going to take vitamin D seriously, test rather than assume.

This page is general information, not medical advice. Anyone pregnant, taking medication, or living with kidney disease or a condition affecting calcium should speak to a doctor before supplementing vitamin D.

Sunscreen reduces the UVB that reaches skin, and UVB is what triggers vitamin D synthesis, so consistent sun protection lowers how much your skin makes. In practice, covering up, staying indoors and shade contribute as much as sunscreen does. This is why vitamin D deficiency is common in sunny countries including Malaysia. It is a reason to consider dietary or supplemental vitamin D, not a reason to stop protecting your skin.

2000 IU, which is 50 micrograms, per 3 g sachet. The European tolerable upper intake level for adults is 4000 IU a day from all sources, so one sachet is half of it. If you take another vitamin D supplement or a multivitamin, count the total.

Protecting your skin from the sun is what reduces the vitamin D your skin makes, so anyone working on an even tone has a reason to put some back. The authorised European claims for vitamin D cover normal immune function and a role in cell division — which is how skin renews itself — alongside calcium and phosphorus absorption, bones, teeth and muscle function. Trials of 1000 to 2000 IU a day have improved severity scores in atopic dermatitis, though that is a diagnosed condition being treated, which is a different thing from a supplement affecting how skin looks.

If you plan to supplement vitamin D seriously, a 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test is the only way to know your actual status. It is inexpensive and widely available in Malaysia and Singapore. Anyone pregnant, on medication, or with kidney disease or a calcium-related condition should speak to a doctor before supplementing.

Liposomal vitamin D3 is one of ten declared actives in Lipo Crystal, alongside Herbosomal® white tomato, liposomal vitamin C, pineapple bromelain, tocotrienol and zinc — one 3 g sachet a day.
